My Research
On this page, you’ll find some background information about my current and past recent studies. I have completed both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree, receiving the highest possible grades for both. Currently, I am completing my Doctoral Thesis. I am interested in research relating to ‘Mixed-Race’ studies, ‘race’ and ethnicity, film, television and media and representation.
‘Mixed-Race’ Women, Relationships and ‘Race’: An Examination of Experiences
My doctoral thesis focuses on ‘Mixed-Race’ women’s experiences of ‘race’ and racism in their romantic relationships with White men. I have interviewed nearly 30 women from across the UK, exploring their experiences across the timeline of their relationships, from their early initial meeting through to the uncertain futures between these two groups.
Oscars All Right? Examining the Representations of ‘Race’ and the Manifestations of Racism in Oscar-Nominated Films Post the #OscarsSoWhite Movement
For my masters’ thesis, I took a sociological approach to film analysis, drawing on both sociological interest and film studies techniques to explore how ‘race’ has been represented on-screen since the #OscarsSoWhite movement, highlighting changing representations but emphasised the importance of not becoming complacent in the stories represented on screen. The movies analysed were Moonlight (2016), Hidden Figures (2016) and Get Out (2017).
Slave Films, Black Actors and the Representation of Black Social History in Film
My undergraduate dissertation explored how identities and histories are represented in high profile movies featuring depictions of slavery. The movies selected, which were explored via textual analysis, included Glory (1989), Amistad (1997), Django unchained (2012) and 12 Years a Slave (2013).
Research Skills
Over my years of studying, I have developed a vast range of skills and techniques that make me an ideal researcher.
-
Qualitative research skills
During this time, I have become confident in implementing various qualitative research techniques, including interviews/focus groups, questionnaires, auto/ethnography and case studies. I recognise and understand the power of such a research approach for providing deep and rich knowledge and context. I also understand the strengths and weaknesses of 'insider' research, a valuable skill that can prove vital to researching specific communities. -
Data analysis
I am a strong supporter of Reflexive Data Analysis, as such a technique ensures that findings represent the sample group whilst also allowing space for the researcher's own power and positionality to be considered in a research context. I am also confident in coding data and employing other methods of analysis, including textual analysis and other techniques drawn across the social sciences. -
Software: data searching, NVivo, Excel, EndNote 20
As part of my PhD, I have undertaken several training modules on various software that have enriched my abilities as a researcher. I am able to employ various data collection and literature searching techniques, as well as being able to utilise specific software, such as NVivo, Endnote 20 and both Microsoft and Apple applications. -
Strong interviewing technique
As part of my thesis training, I have attended modules that have enhanced my interviewing skills and capabilities. I understand the importance of establishing a rapport with participants, of the best form of questions to ask and the necessity of clarification. I am able to collect data that has a richness to it but that also speaks to the matter at hand, all whilst ensuring comfort for participants. -
Time management
Undertaking the PhD journey necessitates strong time management skills. Over my years as a researcher, I have been able to consistently complete work ahead of deadlines, whilst also not neglecting my own self-care. I am capable of working to tight deadlines, with teams or independently, as well as being able to balance the many facets of completing a thesis. -
Self-motivation
The PhD journey requires intense focus, management and motivation, all skills I have developed independently and that I will be able to apply across fields of work. I am incredibly self-driven, and I know I will be able to take this passion from my academic work and apply this across any project before me.
